Before the Sun Rises: The Yat-sen Musical Diary is a documentary about the creation of the musical Yat-sen. The musical was meant to be performed in early 2021, but had to be delayed due to the pandemic. Yet, preparation work on and off stage was not halted.

Film director Wong Fei-pang and his crew spent more than one month documenting the rehearsals and the creative process of the musical behind the scenes, interviewing different key members of the production. Revelations include how the main actor, Ling Man-lung, overcame challenges in his acting career and how he interpreted Sun Yat-sen in the times of the pandemic. Some selected scenes of the musical are also specially recreated in a cinematic way to allow the audience to see the musical from a different perspective before the stage curtain rises.
