In the 18th century, the likes of Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven did not compose keyboard works on the piano we know today. Instead, they used the fortepiano, a different instrument, that was a predecessor of the modern piano. Torsten Mann, currently répétiteur at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Frankfurt am Main, is a fortepiano specialist with a vast knowledge of historically informed performance (HIP) practice. In this masterclass, he will share his insights of performing the Classical repertoire on this period instrument with appropriate skills, sonorities and style—to better understand what the 18th century masters envisioned in their works, and to recreate what audiences of the day would have heard.
